EXPLAIN EUROPE – EUROPE, EXPLAIN!

European Identity in the Arts!

12th of April to 17th of April 2019 – Retzhof Castle / Styria

  • DRAMA IN EDUCATION

Since its inception in 1975, this biannual congress – aimed at pedagogues and social workers from all over the world – deals with contemporary issues and offers its participants a vast array of workshops and lectures by internationally acclaimed drama and theater professionals.

The congress is held in English and always takes place during Passion Week (Friday to Wednesday).

  • EXPLAIN EUROPE – EUROPE, EXPLAIN!

European Identity in the Arts

When we think of EUROPE, it’s probably words like Bureaucracy, BREXIT or the EU Headquarters in Brussels that pop into our minds.
That said, for centuries, it has been the dream of many Europeans to live in openness, diversity and freedom. Something that has never been interpreted better than in the arts themselves.

Let us think of Europe and the arts, let us appreciate Cervantes & Moliere, Shakespeare, Goethe, Chopin, Beethoven & Picasso, Van Gogh, Mozart, The Beatles & Rimini Protokoll.

Europe is, among other things, an invention of artists like Franz Marc, who once wrote: „One can feel an artistic  tension across entire Europe, everywhere new artists wave to each other: a glance, a handshake is adequate to understand.“ (1)

Looking at it from this perspective, it’s easy to see how art and culture have shaped the Old Continent substantially. Art knows no borders. Art is cosmopolitan.

Joint European art projects – and theatre in particular – have proven to help us overcome our common boundaries, may they be linguistic, political or cultural.

However, many European societies are currently facing opposing trends: Signs of old habits we thought we had overcome – patterns of nationalism, separation and erosion of solidarity – are once again highly noticeable.

Thus, the 22nd AITA/IATA asbl congress DRAMA IN EDUCATION will ask the pressing question: How can those who work in the fields of art and culture counteract these tendencies?

Participants of DRAMA IN EDUCATION will tackle different aspects of the European idea and develop artistic approaches to further flesh out the concept of a European identity.

Together with our lecturers, congress attendees will spend six enthralling days dissecting European developments and perspectives. An outsider’s view will be of equal importance as that of an insider. Maybe, with theatrical instruments in hand, we can help shape the Europe we want to live in.
